Socialist hero. Why does she have a monument at all? Do not waste your time.

Mother Jones died in 1930, before working people had the cash and free time to take vacations on The Mother Road. But the elaborate grave monument of the gray-haired labor activist can be glimpsed from Route 66.

So I GOOGLE'd & found the following on this woman.

Let the lessons of the past not be ignored, while ignoring the idle chatter of those who find satisfaction in criticism. The rest of us will change the world.

Mother Jones was a motherly friend to the coal miners of Illinois. She was there helping during the scab wars when they needed her most and became a legendary figure to them and the labor movement in general. The Monument to her is dignified and touching. It is a must see in Mt Olive, Il

Interesting fact about this place...if you are on your way to St. Louis, and you intend to stop by the sun has gone down, and you go anyway, it will FREAK YOU THE F OUT being in a cemetery in the middle of the night. It was eerie, to say the least, that the monument was well lit and served as a beacon... though it seemed like it took forever.

Mother Jones lived to be 100, and spent her Golden Years fighting for the rights of the laboring class, particularly miners. She's buried in a miners cemetery with the victims of the "Battle of Virden," one of many miner vs. mine owner mini-wars at the turn of the 20th century. Her memorial shaft -- by far the largest in the graveyard -- is flanked by life-size bronze statues of a miner and a factory worker.
